Not in Transit is the second show of an unfolding series of exhibitions showcasing new work by eighteen artists from the Espacio Gallery Project.

The title Not in Transit, stands in contrast to the concept of transience inherent in the word nomadic, the latter making reference to the original intention of the 100+ artists that form the Espacio Gallery Project, to organize shows that will travel between established galleries whilst the artists search for their own gallery space.

The show features a diverse group of emerging artists, based in the UK with cultural roots around the world, whose shared intention and artistic journeys come together as an invitation for non-transient aesthetic experiences, that is, to convey a lasting impression by way of an intimate dialogue between the artist, the work and the viewer.

Hot on the heels of the nation’s love affair with contemporary art, Brent will be breaking down the barriers to the art world by launching its very own third Brent Affordable Art Show, just in time for the festive season.

For the Brent Artists’ Resource, Lorenzo Belenguer, co-ordinator of the BAR Gallery at Willesden Green, said: “We have seen an increase of visitors looking for original artworks at a more affordable price by emerging artists. People have started to look more to local artists.”

Featuring work from emerging talent as well as established local artists, the Brent Art Show will give visitors the opportunity to enjoy and purchase an eclectic array of artwork, from painting, sculpture to photography, to prints…etc. Many pieces on show will carry a price tag of under £100, making this the perfect hunting ground for the “next big thing”, or a chance to purchase an original and unique piece from a talented artist.

The exhibition will showcase some of Brent’s wealth of artistic talent, and visitors are encouraged to explore and engage with this new art in a creative and relaxed and environment. The Brent Art Show was conceived in order to inspire new audiences to familiarise themselves with contemporary art in the area, and to encourage the possibility of purchasing and collecting the art itself.

This is a unique opportunity to explore the hidden art of one of London’s most vibrant and culturally diverse communities.

We appreciate the following organisations for providing the prizes for the Best in Brent: Funtain Studios, Ace Cafe London, Lexi Cinema, Wembley Plaza Hotel, Tricycle Theatre and Brent Council.

Ace meal for two and goody bag
Wembley Plaza meal for two and bottle of wine
Lexi cinema two tickets to see any film
Tricycle two tickets to see a production or cinema

The Brent Culture Sport and Learning Forum which consists of Local businesses, and Arts, Sporting and Learning providers in the area, was set up to deliver a joint cultural offer for Brent. The forum believes that Culture plays a crucial role in tackling social exclusion, encouraging healthier lifestyles, promoting safer communities and is a catalyst for lifelong learning.

‘We’ve already paid – Journeys and Kinship’ was inspired in Ghana. The series of works make up a narrative, featuring mixed media paintings and three-dimensional work. The paintings combine visual components with historical signifiers, creating chronological incongruities; past and present visualisations of a shared transatlantic history of the African Continent and the Diaspora, chiefly, West Africa.

The architectural features of the West African traditional door symbolises the two faces. Linking at the threshold is the architectural type with a troubling history – the slave trading fortresses on Ghana’s Cape Coast, principally, the world heritage memorial, Elmina. The other component within the works is the agro-economy of sugar cane and its role in the European-controlled African enslavement industry. This is expressed in the three-dimensional work portraying resistance, while reconnection through the transatlantic journeys takes the form of a wall of recognition – an installation of faces, representing products from the Diaspora that suggest the question, “Here we are [Mother]. Do you not recognise us?”

“As an African born in the Caribbean, my first visit to Ghana and the Continent was a joyful, spiritual and painful experience. I journeyed with my sister and Ghanaian friends. It was an opportunity for cultural and spiritual reconnection. On arrival at the visitors’ reception at both Elmina and Cape Coast Castle, an entrance fee was quoted in Ghanaian Cedis and U S Dollars: The natural response from the Diaspora was: ‘We’ve already paid’.
Brent Artist Resource will host a launch event for TESTIMONIES – a Cultural Olympiad and Inspire Mark project created to explore Londoners’ stories and experiences before the Olympics in 1948 and today.

With the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games just around the corner TESTIMONIES will turn the tales revealed into audio broadcasts that will be heard all over Wembley Arena Square (pending to approval) and in other venues during the summer 2012.

TESTIMONIES is an exciting initiative supported by £30,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) exploring Londoners’ stories and expectations before the Olympics in 1948 and today – in advance of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Created by Lorenzo Belenguer in response to London residents looking to have a more active role in the Olympics TESTIMONIES aims to empower conversation about this historic event and provide a legacy for the 2012 Olympics. By inviting people that competed or witnessed in the 1948 Olympic Games to share their story, we aim to draw comparisons between both Olympic Games held in London and reveal both the similarities and differences between then and now.

The launch event is open to all Londoners and will give everyone the chance to talk to those that have provided their testimony, including residents who were at the 1948 London Olympics; experts in Oral History from the British Library and the Sydney Olympics; staff from Wembley Stadium and Arena and just everyone who wants to come and talk about the Olympics.

I AM is a series of 12 panels of oil on canvas; each canvas measures 1.5 x 2.1 m, giving a total size of 18 m long by 2.1m high. I have completed 6 out of the 12 panels. The title “I AM” comes from the invisible, something who is and hasn’t been made and has always existed. The main body of the painting is our planet with it’s transformation through time, as we all know our universe started with the Big Bang and after the Big Bang, we saw the development of galaxies, stars, planets etc. Following that human ego of civilisation and path of no return, to our greatest technology achievements and supernatural intelligence and so called power. This leads us to build more power plants and gas pipes, and digging every corner of the earth, which is the only place designed for humans to dwell in; to send with no control or supervision, different spaceships and satellites out of our planet, causing instead a huge dump of wreckage in the atmosphere. That, in return will specifically be the end of our own existence. Reflecting the circle of life, the cause and effect, the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, life and death.

18 August – 16 September

Open daily 2-6pm – Free entrance

Brent Artists Resource in collaboration with Sylvia Rendon, the curator, is proud to present Through the Eyes of Colombian Art.

The art of our ancestors has always been tied to the myths, rituals and legends, as represented in elements: air, fire, water, mother earth, the moon sun and animals.

It represents the power of creation, motherhood, life and death of this kingdom through to the cosmology of each culture. Always rescuing its roots, beliefs, and expressing them with graphics, colours and sculptural forms that are close to the magic of the spirits of life and death.

Sylvia Rendon, the curator, says: “As a Curator, this will be my first major show in Europe; I will showcase the most talented, exciting and highly regarded Colombian artists that will bring to life the essence of true Colombian art. Visitors will absorb the work that they see before them and have their hearts opened, minds awakened and their eyes focused onto a world that embraces vibrant colour, rich diversity and unbroken passion”.

The idea to bring all these fine artists together to jointly showcase their powerful mastery of their chosen medium that has taken over 30 years to perfect. I can think of no better place than London, a place where diversity, understanding and compassion form an integral part of this country’s heart. A Heart that Colombia also wishes to share with the world. I believe this exhibition can strike a chord with people who share a common interest in conservationist ideologies and ethics”

The Gallery at Willesden Green, selected by the BBC as one the top community galleries in London, gives a unique opportunity to explore the works of British and international artists.

The BAR Gallery at Willesden Green is a vibrant community space where new ideas are incubated and encouraged, where emerging and talented artists find a place to display and perform, and where art becomes accessible to everyone in the community.

Registered Company number 5700942

Brent Artists Resource is supported by Brent Council
